To print the map at a specific map scale click the Print button to open the Page Setup window.

In the Map Size section of the window click the radio choice, Specify scale, and then select the scale you want from the Scale drop-down list. Or, you can type in the scale you want. For example, you can type in 1,200 although it may not be in the drop-down list.

No matter what scale you select, only the currently displayed map area prints. If the map is displayed at 1:12,000, and you specify that it should print at 1:30,000, the printed map will not show the larger area that would display at 1:30,000. Instead, only the area that is displayed at 1:12,000 is printed, at the scale of 1:30,000.

Engineering Scale Print

If you are currently using an Engineering Scale and you want the output to match that scale, then you MUST specify a map scale which is 12 times the number of the engineering scale in the Page Setup window above. For example, if you have an engineering scale of 1:100 feet, then enter 1,200 for the print map scale as indicated in the image above. Please see Engineering Scale for instructions on how to set the engineering scale (and Map Scale on how to set the map scale).

Note: Once you set the engineering scale then the map scale will automatically set itself to 12 times the engineering scale.

So, if you want to print a map using the engineering scale, (and if your math skills are not up to par!) then simply set the Engineering Scale, before you hit the print button, and then use the current Map Scale number in the Print Page Setup window above.
