Layer Definition:

Layers, in general, are like separate transparent sheets on which map data is drawn. These sheets are layered together on top of each other to present a detailed map to the end user.

Layers may have one or more choices(sheets) to turn on or off. A layer with only one choice will have a checkbox Checkbox. A layer with multiple choices will have three or more radio buttons Radio Button. For example, in the this application, Habitat Corridors has only one choice, but Permit/Site History has several choices to choose from.

Dynamic Layers:

A layer that gets data from the Server as the user zooms in and out on the map, turns the layer on and off, and so forth. Unlike static layers, dynamic layers download only the data needed for the current mapping window view, so the dynamic option is better for layers with large data sets or data that needs to be kept more secure.

Static Layers:

A layer that stores all of the data for the entire layer in the map file itself. Unlike dynamic layers, static layers download all of the data for the layer when the layer is first accessed, so the static option is better for layers with small data sets, are not updated frequently, and data that does not require high security.

Groups:

Groups are a collection of related layers to help organize layers in a map. Layer groups appear in the Layer Menu.

Folders:

Folders are subgroups of layers that share similar characteristics. Layer folders appear within certain groups in the Layer Menu.
